Trailer Winch

I was wondering if any of you folks had ever used the crank and gears of a truck trailer dolly leg to make a winch. I've raised some pretty heavy loads up a few inches in years gone by with those. Low gear on those usually has some "stuff." Just wondering. gm

it may work but if you are thinking of using it like I think you are (the cross pipe as the drum) then you may want to add some sort of brake or catch to hold the load. You would want that, if you have to stop winding to sort something out, so it doesn't freewheel and let the load down.

You park the handle in the bracket to keep the trailer up. It is rare, but they can spin down.

Gear ratio is what give's a winch it's "stuff". You might be able to drag a dozer onto the trailer but it would require 2 hours. Here's a way of seeing just how much ratio is built-in. A goose or 5th wheel with electric/manual crank option will spin the crank like a propeller if you accidently leave crank in then push electric switch. I found out the hard way when I decided to"help"the electric motor because the battery was low. Lucky it didn't take my head off but my arm hurt for a week afterwards.
