Hi guys, been a while since the last post but I do read on here when I get a chance. Anyways, im working on a 02 Powerstroke for a guy at work. It will not start unless its plugged in. Weve had some warm weather 70+ in the last few days and itll just crank and puff white in the rear. Owner had three g/p and three injectors replaced a while back. I told him he should have replaced all off them and not some of both. Anyways, are these strokers really that hard starting that a guy must use the g/p's ? My 02 Cummins will fire in 0? without grid heaters !!! Itll sound like the neibhor kids beatin the heck out disk blades but she'll fire up with ease. Not this stroker !!! Cranks and cranks. Plug it in a few hrs and she'll lite fine. It does need a new g/p relay. Are there two glowplug relays or just one ? If one then whats the other relay for ? Thanks

Those 'strokes do like to use glow plugs to start on cold starts, mild temps and cooler unlike Cummins, which don't use GP's and the grid heater is not really a start aid, its more for the smoke emissions on cold start. Anyway if 3 were replaced they should have at least replaced 1 more if they were on the same side or all of them. Another thing that goes bad is the valve cover gaskets and harnesses inside the v/c (wiring passes through the valve cover gaskets. These are know to develop loose connections and burn the connectors or wiring, there is a connection on both sides of the gasket.

If the GP circuits are bad there should be a code or codes for the faults if you have a way to scan. You can also unplug the harness going into the valve cover and test them individually with a test light or meter. Less seldom but definitely possible it could have a glow plug controller bad too.

I forgot to mention the relay. Those trucks not only have glow plugs they also have the intake air heater ( same as grid htr). That is why you see two relays up there. The glow plug relay is the rear one, the intake heater is the front .

I have probably changed around 3000 7.3 injectors in the last ten years. I have NEVER replaced all the injectors on one. Cummins yes but not a Ford or a duramax.
