Lincoln STT II

I think I messed up at an auction and purchased a Lincoln STT II welder for a good price. Got it home and found out it needs three phase power. Didn't even think to look close while waving my hand around. So, can this thing be ran on a phase converter or do I just sell it and go get another machine.

Greg

From what I found in a quick search it is 3 phase only. As far as I know, you can't run a welder on a phase converter. I would think especially an electronic one as that appears to be. That model sells for $7000+ new, so you may be able to market it and come out alright.

Strictly 3-phase. STT (surface tension transfer) was developed for welding thin materials with very low spatter and low deposition. Mainly for appearance parts. It has become the preferred process for open-gap root pass on pipelines. Spatter forms when the droplet separates from the wire. STT chops the current just before the separation.

Mike, that was kind of why I wanted one of these. I do mostly light fab work at home 3/8" or less most of the time. I did call Lincoln and there is no work-around on this one. They can be run on a digital phase converter, but they are pricy for one big enough to run this thing. Oh well. I can get my money back out of it easy plus a little probably. I got a really good deal on it when I bought it.

Terry, you are right on the money. That is the machine. The one I have has the STT 10 wire feeder unit. They work pretty slick. The suitcase drive would probably fit my needs better, but for the money I not complaining. These are pricy little units new. I gave 1,500 at the auction so I didn't get hurt any. I'll get my money back out of it plus some and just go buy a single phase unit. It's all good.

BTDT. Bought a pallet of 3 electric chain hoists at an auction- got them home, and 2 of them are 3 phase. Didn't even occur to me that something as small as a chain hoist would be 3 phase. Someone else will get a chance at them next time.
