Capacitor with built in discharge resistor

Is there a way to test such an animal? I have a start cap that looks clean and resistance goes up when I put the probes on the terminals. But as soon as I switch over and try to test for capacitance, I get OL. The resistor is soldered to the terminals and I really don't want to dismantle the thing just so I can test it. Would appreciate any information.

Only way to check them is to un-solder or cut one end of the resistor, test and then reattach the resistor. Have done many. The resistor makes the contacts of the relay last longer.

Yup if you look in modern day relays in your car, my 2003 Expedition, you will find resistors like that inside the relays for like the headlights and horns etc. . Keeps the contacts from getting all charred. I popped the covers off of a couple to clean them just for giggles. Cleaned the contacts with a little strip of match book cover. Very very little crud on them cause they have that little resistor on them with no burn at all. Darn I forgot to note the resistance! It kind of acts like a rubber band and then a rubber bumper. Think of it that way to fathom what it does. I will have to pop one open again to see the value. They also have that on capacitors and the resistors slowly :burn: off the voltage stored in the cap.

YUP......disconnect the resistor. The better quality capacitors come already with the resistor installed.

If the resistor is not installed, check with a motor shop for the resistor values and keep some on hand.

While the resistor is off, check it for values before reinstalling.

John,PA Relays are are expensive, and the quality has changed.

Yes, you can test it as is. Once the cap is charged up you know that the impedance is just the resistor, so you can easily get that. Then, knowing the resistor value, you can let the cap discharged while measuring the voltage. From those measurements you can get the time constant of the circuit, from which you can calculate the capacitance.
