I have an old freezer, over 40 years old and an older refigertator freezer combo. All of the door gaskets are starting to fail and I can't seem to locate replacements. Has anyone ever used something other than the original gaskets for sealing? If so what did you use and how did it work.
Thanks,
Bill

Hello,

If it is a man cave refrigerator do like I did. Built up the refrigerator side with duct tape. Use a dollar bill to check for a good seal. Worked for me..........

I have had good luck at appliancezone.com or ereplacementparts.com. If you have a model # you might be able to google it.

Stick on foam weather stripping. Not very sanitary, but if it gets dirty you can just replace it.

The foam strip does work but it is fragile. If there is any kind of air leaks on the freezer it will frost, then stick, then tear off. I work with the commercial guys all the time at work. The gaskets on real equipment are very tough and still get all ripped up. If you can take very detailed measurements and or photos you can look on line and or check out a good supply house. There are like hundreds of types of gaskets. Most of them are either plastics or silicone materials and very flexible. Here is a thought, go hit your local scrap yard where they junk "white metal" items. That is refidge units, washers and dryers, ovens Etc. If you have a rough idea you might just luck out with making your own from what you find.

Ther is avilable "universal gasket material". Comes in a 50 ft roll.
Check at any refrigeration supply house in YOUR area.

Also you should miter the corners by hand with a sharp razor.

You can glue the gasket onto the case, if your freezer has the "puch-in" groove for the OEM.

You can use any left overs for the weather seals around the car or truck doors, too. Weather strips.

I recommend 3M glue from NAPA.
