some of you probably know what I am talking about and are using these chains ... my son bought a new style chain for his chainsawthat was different from anything I ever sawed with ever ,,.. and I like it very much ,.. we had some ornery old pignut hickory logs that were cut 3 -4 yrs ago that mean seasoned hickory was killing our chains on the saws ,,.. so ,Michael camehere today with a chain that can actually be sharpened by setting the sharpening device on the snout of the bar , starting the saw and by depressing the device it makes contact with the chain and puts a fine sharp edge that cuts great ,,. we cut up 5- 30 ft seasoned hickory logs into blox before the saw run out of gas,. these blox are 2 ft thru ,, and the chain never needed sharpening , it turned a nitemare into a dream ,.does anyone have a link for more info

New? Sounds like the self sharpening chains of decades ago. Never really seemed to be too good from what I heard. And really a good chain should cut as much wood as you say easily without needing a sharpen. I have found over the years stihl chains really are harder and last better, also keep your wood off the ground, both when cutting and harvesting, I have so much better luck with saw chains now than the old days when I dragged logs around. Now I pick them up and they rarely touch the ground and saws last great and the forest doesn't take a beating too

the old self-sharpening chains were sharpen by a stone under the sprocket cover, not on the 'snout', which I take to be the end of the bar. We always took the sharpening apparatus completely off & ran regular chain, sharpening with a regular file. They had a bad habit of dropping down & sharpening full time or ruining the chain.

markct is right, a good chain should do your job without being sharpened unless dirt is involved.

About dirt... I always think of that when I see logs being drug out or about in a woods, especially when muddy... what about the dirt that the logs pick up... not good for saw chains.

Oregon has a chain they call 'powersharp' that sharpens like that. A bit differet, but Kind of a re-introductinon of the automatic sharpening chain they had on Craftsman chainsaws back in the 70's or 80's.

sounds like the powersharp units. trimming rough cutting do alright real heavy stuff not so popluar. i am currently using that chain to cut house apart in area hitting nails shingles etc ,self sharp work good so far doing this stuff. they have came down in price also, have here on hand if that helps
