Alternator belt

My Altern belt broke on my Farmall Super A...It cranks over well, but doesn't fire now...does this have to do with the Alternator or with something else?

Thanks

Your alternator is only there to keep the battery charged. If it still cranks over well, the battery should have plenty of power to run the ignition too but you could put a charger on the battery to boost it back up in case the battery doesn't have enough power left to run the ignition.

Did the belt hit a wire when it broke? The belt broke on my big White 2-135 one time and hit the wire going to the injector pump. That one was a head scratcher. It stretched the wire and broke the copper wires inside and not the outer coating.

It would be hard for that to happen with alternator on one side of engine and coil on other side of engine and coil wires facing toward rear of tractor. Unless tractor has had somebody at some time did some weird wiring.

On that White, the alternator is on the right and the injector pump is on the left. The belt whipped up somehow and caught it.

In theory not having an alternator working should not stop you tractor from running since it is there to keep the battery charged. I ran one of my tractors for years with out a working alternator on it and never had problems with it running. What you need to do is check that you still have a good blue/white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more. If you do not then check to see if maybe when the belt broke it may have pulled a wire off some place which would cause your problem. Or you might try a hot wire from the ignition side of the battery to the ignition side of the coil and see it it will run. If it runs with a hot wire then you probably have a loose wire some place
