Digital atomic clocks

The outdoor temperature sensor for our old clock appears to have died this morning after 10 - 12 years of use. (At least that is what appears to be the problem.) I've searched the web for replacement clocks; none of them have the same features as the old La Crosse. I can buy a new sensor, but would just as soon buy a new clock w/sensor. Marathon has some good looking atomic clocks but they only have indoor temp; we want a clock with indoor and outdoor temps - and LARGE numbers.

I hate to ask the obvious but have you replaced the batteries in both units and in the right order? I also have had a La Crosse clock for several years. My set of directions say to put batteries in outdoor unit first and then the clock. Wait about 10 minutes before pressing any buttons. Good luck.

EXACTLY right! That thing will ignore you if you don't follow the proper sequence. Nice clocks, but finicky about battery changes.

Yes, I followed the directions. The outdoor temp would come on for a few minutes and then just got the bars with no numbers. That's why I'm suspicious of the sensor, but it could still be internal in the clock. However, the manual said that the sensor has to connect with the clock before the clock can be set, which I discovered this morning.

Dick2: I've had similar troubles with Taylor units before--what I ended up doing was bringing the outdoor sensor inside and placing it near the clock. Once everything synched back up again, I took it back outside and it worked fine. No reason it shouldn't have worked where it was--it had worked fine there for years--but it wouldn't until I brought it in. Like many inanimate objects, they seem to have a mind of their own and delight in frustrating us humans!

I refer to them as wwv clocks or self setting clocks.. The atomic clocks use "real atom splitting" and decay measurements.

Thanks for the info; that got everything working again like it did before. Somehow the sensor lost sync with the clock. I placed the sensor next to the clock, followed the directions and everything works! If it happens again, I'll replace the sensor as the clock works right.

Glad it worked for you, Dick2--it's one of those things why there's no reason it SHOULD work, but it DOES work, and I'm willing to take "yes" for an answer!

Here is a picture of command central. My weather Channel unit, a big clock form 2000 and still working, and a full size Trerice boiler thermometer. I can measure everything! I didn't reset the one yet. I picked up the weather unit and had it in my hand for a minute or two. That is why it is reading a little higher. They usually are within one degree.

I had about 10 years use out of a LaCrosse. Replacement outdoor temperature sensor costs about as much as a new clock at Walmart. Use the old clock elsewhere in the house for time only. Leo
