Log splitter pump

I am looking at upgrading the log splitter my dad made with a single stage pump to a two stage.

What GPM would you recommend for the first stage?

It seems that the more common 2 stage pumps on most splitters are either 11 GPM or 16 GPM. I'm not all that knowledgeable on hydraulics, but it seems you need to coordinate the pump gpm's with the cylinder size and reservoir size. Some quick calculations may be in order. You will like a 2 stage pump, having run both types on difficult wood, the 2 stage is noticeably better in my opinion.

Hello David G,

You did not say what size engine you have. For a 5H.P engine an 11 GPM two stage pump will do just fine. It will outperform a 7 or 8 H.P. motor with a single stage pump. Northern tool has them. Just go on the web site. If I recall correctly the 11 GPM with a 1/2" shaft was $129.00,

Guido.

Hello David G,

With that size engine I would get a 16 GPM two stage pump, You can then split some serious wood!

I use a Tecumseh 10 HP electric start engine(with charger)(Model No. HH100) directly coupled to a Northern Hydraulic 2 stage pump. The pump puts out 11 gallons on the first stage and then shifts back down, by itself, to about 3 gallons a minute to finish the job. We split wood about 2 ft in diameter all (maple, ash, oak and beach) with no trouble. 10/11~maybe less seconds full cycle time(from back to wedge and auto return). Ram is adjusted for 16 inch length wood.

I am using a 13.6gpm two stage pump that I got from Northern 4 or 5 years ago, actually I see from the paper work it was in 2010 I got the splitter going. Anyway it is with a 4 1/2" cylinder and a 8 hp engine. Engine has plenty of power, probably a 5 hp would have done it. I have been happy with the parts I got from Northern so far. I have split a lot more wood for a couple of friends than for me and in doing this the thing has run for a couple of days fairly steady a few times. I had a splitter with a single stage pump and two stage is way better, you will like it!
