if you are looking for the good olden day ether starting fluid that has lots of WOOF in it, the john deere dealer carries the 80 % stuff. (i did wear a clever disguise so they wouldnt recognize me) . about 4 bucks a can.

In my experience,John Deere is the only one that needs it. lol
My 4040 had a can a week habit.

This Sunday you can use it to make Rabbit Flambe' like some restaurants. It's on the menu:

The old 30 series cases had a major jones for it too. Our 730 needed it most mornings all year.

Most of the old 71 Detriots I had to start cold. Loved the stuff. The 12V 71 ate at least two cans while starting. When it got real cold.

Hello glennster,

Here is what I use. Any two cycle mix I have at hand and an old bottle of chloraseptic . Cheaper and MUCH MUCH safer.........

Michigan. My Fiat,Hercules and Perkins powered Olivers start without it. Unlike the Deeres, they have manifold heaters. The Fiat powered one has a thermostart that ignites fuel in the manifold. That one's good down to about -15 to -18F without any other aid. The Perkins and Herc powered ones will start at about +5 just using the electric manifold heater without plugging them in. That 4040 Deere was bad. The 3010 wasn't quite so bad,but below about +30,it needed a whiff of ether in the air cleaner stack.

The Waukesha powered Olivers? That's another story. It's best to park those on a hill.

Have had good success with TSC Traveler brand premium starting fluid. Just checked a can. Gives ingrediients, but not the percentages. I like to use it sparingly and only when necessary.

rrlund, You hit the nail on the head. My farm photo shows the 1555 and 2-70 on the hill while the White with the Cummin's is on the level. The 1950T started great whomever rebuilt it did an excellent job! We bought it that way.

By what's in it does your machine have a sore throat?

On a more serious note we have a small industrial diesel made by Kelly and Lewis in Oz. 5 hp water cooled. The cold start assistance is a pad that you soak in half diesel/ half petrol and insert in the intake. Rattles a bit on start up and you pull the pad out so it can breathe, then reverse to the open hole and slide back.

Been on a bore (tube well) since 1955 and as yet untouched by a major spanner. As is (as far as known) the 1940 Southern Cross on a similar well.

Maybe you should think of diesel rather than tso?

This last winter we woke up our 1855 one cold day that was in the single digits. Had to give the battery a boost, but once we did that she fired right up. Of course we also put a gear reduction starter on it 2 years ago as well. Really makes a difference.

The 1600 starts almost every day as well. Including that day.

hated using the stuff put heaters on the tractors and plug them in be done with it ,never failed to start and no more chatter and smoke to the yang yang.

You are so right about the cases. when I was a kid dad had a new 400 it needed ether all the time, got a 900 a little later same way. I picked up an 830 a few years ago and it needs a sniff almost all year long unless it is t shirt weather.
