Found this picture on the website of a local auction house. Never seen a treadle powered lathe before. My apologies for the size of the picture, I have no control over the picture as it is on their website.

fred, look for New Yankee Workshop on a local PBS affiliate. Roy uses a foot powered lathe. FYI...those can sell for big bucks.

.

Interesting machine. It's the oldest turret lathe I've seen. But it also has a tails tick. The lack of a thread cutting setup makes me think the turret was a Orem device. I've seen foot treadle lathes before, but that is a little bigger.

Interesting machine, I believe you are thinking of "the woodwrights shop", been awhile since I have seen it, but was fun to watch.

This auction has a bunch of automotive, watchmaking, antique firearms, modelmaking and other stuff, including oil cans, powder cans, fuel cans and other flammables. I would imagine they have extinguishers all over the place. Haven't decided if I'll go or not, as there's a car show nearby the same day.

I've seen those before. That dude is quite old, circa 1900.

The style of the carriage handles and the general design looks like a Niles. I can read "Rockford, Ill" on the bottom but can't make out the middle.
Niles later became part of Jones & Lamson.

Reminds me of Count Kirill Bezukhov's foot/leg powered lathe in War and Peace.
He worked on it in the afternoons making gold snuff boxes for his wealthy friends.
Ca. 1810 or so.

Yeah...that's the one! Unless Porter Cable made it, I don't think Norm would have used it!

Woodwright Shop is the correct show. Man, my memory is for S*** anymore. :)

My grandmother had a Singer sewing machine like that. Was setup in her parlor and she used it all of the time. She could really make that thing go too. My mother and her sisters all had the newest, latest, greatest electric jobs but couldn't hold a candle to Grandma pumping away on that thing.

Thanks for the memories.
