Plasma Cutter Question

What is the difference between cutting ability and severence ability? I've noticed severence thickenss is always greater than cutting thickness.

i'll just take a guess at it. i have a thermal dynamics 1/2 inch capacity plasma. it will clean and straight cut 1/2 in steel. if you get thicker, it will cut it, but it is not a straight clean cut, it kind of flares to the side at the bottom of the cut.

I USED To HAVE ONE SOLD IT BUT LIKE ALREAdy mention severance will cut but sloppy or basically past its prime cutting thickness

The others have it about right. They will pierce more than they will cut reliably. If your buying, buy for thicker than you need as max thickness is very slow cutting. And for aluminum you can cut steel thickness almost in half. Mine is rated to pierce 1 1/4" and cut 1", but at 3/4" it's slower and not any better than a torch. It will cut 1/2" aluminum well and barely cut 3/4".
