Lithium battery voltage ratings?

Hello

A 12 volt DeWalt pack rated at 12VMAX Has 3 cells in it.
A porter cable 20VMAX has 5 cells in it.
Smoking mirrors? Voltage war? They are 3.7 volts cells.
Both pack have a MAX at the voltage label. The voltage those cells usually charge up to is 4.2V, So all is well?

Yep, don't know why they call them 3.7 volt because at that point they are in need of recharge. I think they finally realized the
nominal voltage of 18650s should be called 4v (charged state). My 18v ryobi pack has 5 x INR18650s but measures 20+ volts, I guess
they wanted to make it compatible with 18v nicad batteries so instead of calling it a 20v battery they just let it slide. My 40 volt Ryobi battery has 10 x INR18650's, 4 volt per cell just like it should be.

Hello chuckinnc,

The 3.7v or 3.6v is the manufacturer rating. Lnr18650 cells in the 3cell pack are rated at 3.6v, 1300 Mah. The same manufacturer has Lcr18650 rated at 2200 to 2800 Mah
at 3.7V. Higher capacity equal higher discharge rate. You would have to check each cell a
t the manufacturer site to get all the specs. By the way litium cells will charge up to 4.2 volts, so they could also rate the pack of 5 to 21 volts, and still be O.K.😇

Dewalt charge to 3.3. Samsung 4.2 out of defective laptop. Haven't been on charger for very long time.

Hello Geo-TH,In,

Those are 2600Mah rated at 3.7 volts. They are LCR. Lithium Cobalt Rechargeable, High discharge rate cells, 3 in series and 3 or six more in parallel. If you look at the voltage rating in the lap top pack, it will be 11.1 volts. If they were 3.6V, the rating would be 10.8V. The 3 cells in the picture are rated 12 volts? Same cells are they not?
