How long have the Lincoln Ideal Arc welders with the half round top been out of production? A place I worked several years ago had one, good machine but that has been a long time ago. There are always some on Fleabay for $500-700. but am scared they are worn out.
Miller seems to own the market for new welders around here. Looking for stick, if I go with new might add Mig.

Machine will be for home use (not production).

Thanks.

You cut with it. For a birthday grandpa made me a stand for a bench grinder out of a widow maker rim and some 900 pound piece of pipe he had. He always turned his welder way up and cut with it. Who needs a torch??

About a year later he told me he burned up his old round top cutting that pipe.

Pick your favorite brand and look up 3-in one welders. Inverter power supply and they will weld stick, mig and for more money for the tig torch they tig. One of the best parts is pick a cord and pug them into a power source.(115v or 220v)

They don't wear out, no moving parts other than switch and amp adjustment. They can be overheated and burn out but that takes serious overuse beyond duty cycle. I air arc with ours often and it rarely warms up even

I purchased a Miller Roughneck welder several years ago, it's a good little welder. Just right for home use. I am the third owner of it and both guys before me just used it for the generator. You could tell cause the leads still looked brand new. I am by no means a pro at welding but it works great for.

I agree with Bob. Not mine, but mine is almost identical to this. Don't know when it was made, but I know it was considered ancient when I dragged it home in 1969. Still works great.

There is not a lot to be worn out on a welder /. If you look at one and it welds you are probably okay. Just a bunch of windings with no real moving machine parts aside from a fan. Of coarse on eBay you can't try it but if you buy locally you can try it.

That's a Marquette. Lincoln made a welder with plug in taps like that, but it had the angled top like their current model K1170 AC 225 welder, and all the holes were in the front panel near the top. Lincoln also made a round topped welder with a crank on the front like the round topped Idealarc, but it was a 180 amp AC welder---more of a homeowner grade welder than a commercial duty one like the Idealarc.

I think you're correct, though Lincoln would probably never admit it. :)
Before buying one, be sure to check, as the roundtop IdealArcs came in AC-only and AC/DC models, just like the smaller tombstones.
Agree with others that the IdealArcs were probably pretty bulletproof, as long as the fan kept running. Some pictures of factory maintenance I-Arcs on ebay and craigslist look like they were beat to H and back and still kept running.

I bought this Emerson about 30 years ago from a friend who purchased it at a school sale. He said it worked so I bought it from him and it's been a good stick welder.
