Kubota needs rings...

Hey,
I have a Sub-compact Kubota b1600. It's spitting small oil drops out of this rubber/plastic tube located on the side of the engine (I'm a real gear head can you tell). Someone told me that my rings are probably going bad. I don't want to take my tractor to a shop that will charge me 90 bucks an hour to do head work. But am leery of going on craigslist to get a random backyard mechanic. My question, are these kinds of tractors difficult to work on and worth 90 an hour? Thanks!

Someone told you .Like someone on a barstool ? Check the oil level and keep running it . If it smokes alot another story. { The rings are not head work}

Hey, I married someone I met from a barstool. But no, the opinion came from someone who does work on my lawn tractor. He doesn't do diesel. Anyhow, I think I'll go to the Kubota dealer for their assessment.

It could be rings, but it could be other things.

Not sure what type of crankcase ventilation it has, but there may be a hose going to the intake, could be a
vented oil cap... Make sure something is not clogged up or collapsed causing the crankcase to pressurize.

Check the oil level, could be overfilled, or the oil contaminated with fuel.

Could be a blown head gasket pressurizing the crankcase.

Typically worn rings will result in hard starting, blue smoke when cold, oil consumption. If all it is doing is spitting a little oil, and nothing else is found to be wrong, might just run it and keep a close watch on the oil, see if it gets worse, or maybe something you can live with for a while.

Welcome to Yesterday's Tractors John.
Just call your Kubota dealer and tell them a
guy on a barstool said you should have your
head examined.
Post back their reply.

First off, how many hours on the darned little imported thing?

If it's been taken care of I would THINK there must be 8 or ten thousand hours on it for you to be having blowby issues.

Check all the fluid levels and then take the little guy out and work the hell out of it for several days. The cylinder walls have probably glazed over from babying it along. Working it at operating temp will cut the glaze and improve performance.

How long since the injectors were tested and the valves adjusted ? All too many do not do this and bad injectors can ruin an engine.

Is this a Kubota-specific recommendation?
