muffler exhaust manifold bolts

seems like i always break off manifold, exhaust manifold & flange bolts. then i have to center drill and left handed drill out remainder. is there a hi temp grease or anything else to keep bolt lubricated ? is it wise to replace with grade 8 ?

Loctite C5A copper based anti seize is good for 1800 deg. I have never used it on manifold bolts but I don't know why it wouldn't work. Someone else may come on with more experience then me.

yep been there did that... I haven't had to try again yet but back then the advise I got was remove em when the engine is hot helps..Kinda thought to myself that that seems logical cause I have used torch to heat up bolts and they come loose but didnt care to work on a hot engine...

Use a copper-based anti-seize. For me it's like Frank's Hot Sauce. "I put that s**t on everything". Don't bother with the aluminum-based type. Most studs are already Gr 8.

After you get them out drill them so you can put a nut on the opposite end. Then if they twist off just replace the bolt. Did that 30 years ago on the old Chrysler's we drove.

Brass or stainless nuts help, grade 8 won't take the heat on applications like turbos often, grade 5 holds up better generally, this is of course if the oem special turbo bolts are unavailable

I have had very good luck with ceramic based anti-seize. When the bolts are removed there is a white powder left over that helps the bolts ease out.. Walter product called "rock and roll"

"grade 8 won't take the heat on applications like turbos"

HUH???? Don't tell DEERE and Cummins!

"Brass or stainless nuts help"

Stainless fasteners (while they sound like a good deal) often GALL and seize on exhaust applications.

Nickle based anti seize is what I use, better than copper for temp resistance (2400-2600*f) but both would be sufficient here, nickle is better to use when mating different metals together, and better resistance to corrosive materials like acids or other chemicals.

Used NICKEL ANTI-SEIZE on all Exhaust Cap Screws (Exhaust manifold to Head) of the 4000 HP NORDBERG V-16's.
Used NICKEL ANTI-SEIZE on all CASE SPLIT LINE BOLTS of the WESTINGHOUSE STEAM TURBINES.

Speaking from my experience and the wisdom passed down to me by a 40year experienced heavy equipment mechanic. I didn't fully believe it till our allis Chalmers loader broke 3 of the turbo bolts I had put in, replaced with grade 5 and been fine. Maybe something to do with the Lawson bolts composition, I dunno. And yes I know Deere uses 8 for manifold bolts etc

I watched a mechanic heat the manifolf intill it glowed red, used a extension, socket and air gun.The studs came right out, then he installed new studs.
