Had a new hard drive installed in the computer.

Now the fun begins. The old 75 gig hd was about filled up so the computer guy in town installed a new 500 gig hd. Since I did not keep track of the software for my wifi modem and since Netgear has such a user unfriendly website I went out and bought a new wifi router. (Linksys) Now it will not connect with the wifi antenna on my computer.(The antenna is a Netgear). I now have to run a ethernet cable directly to the computer to get the web. When I plug my wifi antenna in it used to light up with a little blue light, now it does not light up and I have tried it in about 3 different ports both front and rear on the computer. Now the wifes Kindle will not download books. It says it needs a wifi connection. Being a technoboob is for the birds! Any thoughts?

You could have multiple problems preventing your pc from connecting to your wireless network.
1. Setup the wireless SSID on your router, select the security type and set up a security code.

2. Now on your pc, go to control panel, click on network and sharing, find your SSID and click connect and then type in your Security code.

You need to reload the drivers for the dongle or wifi device.. So the computer will know how to turn it on. go to manf site and support and put in that device number and look for software/drivers...

This has been going on for a couple of days. I lost the boot up disc for the Netgear server. I have been to the Netgear
website many times trying to download the boot up software. They offer 8 different versions for my server with NO way
to differentiate them. Since I bought this server in 2012, they will not assist me. Netgears website is utterly useless
unless you have a degree in Computer engineering.

I am just an old country computer guy but I will ask a dumb question. Can you go to Network and sharing center and see that the new router has a signal? If so then you will need to select and put in your new password for the network. Are you running Windows 7 ? I am guessing that the netgear antenna you refer to is plugged in to a USB jack and is actually a receiver/transmitter and not just an antenna. If so, pull the netgear antenna out and restart computer and after restart - plug the antenna back in and see if the computer will automatically reload the drivers. Then you will have to select the network and put in your new network password.

Sorry to say that solving the problems seem beyond your technical abilities, no offense intended.

You'll need to setup the key for your new router on devices you're trying to connect to it. Check your computer's wireless networks nearby. See if your router shows up. If you've got neighbors nearby with wireless, you should see their networks too. Good luck.

Crud your computer guy should be able to do all of this for you except for you own wifi. As has been said, open the icon on your computer and your whole local wifi terminals should pop up. One time I was in the city and did that just for giggles. Almost 50 wifi's popped up!

Did the guy clone the old drive or start new with the new drive? if a clone the software should still be there?

You said you are running XP. I am guessing that you are using a laptop. If true - First look and see if you have a key on the keyboard that turns the wifi off and on. I would think if your old hard drive was cloned that all drivers were already installed. If not then you can download the drivers from the Netgear Support site. You will need to know the model number of the USB adapter.

Solved the problem. I am now connected through wireless. I called my computer guy, he had me bring the computer and external antenna back to him and he installed a driver. I think he forgot to do that when he put my new 500 byte hard drive in. Oh, well, another trip to town, and now I can get the thing off my dining room table and back to my desk where it belongs. Thanks for all your help.

I'm surprised that you bothered to replace the internal hard drive on an older computer. Why not just as easily have purchased an external hard drive and move the space eating documents to it, and then leave the internal (C:) drive for applications and programs? There is a wide variety of external HD manufacturers that make them...250GB, 500GB, 1T, 4T for much cheaper and convenience than what you just got and paid for. The external HD can be moved from computer to computer since it would be used for storage anyway. What's done is done, but if your HD isn't bad and you're looking for more space, next time get an external and move space hogging documents to it instead, assuming the you have usable USB ports to plug it into.
