My house has a very old American Standard single handled shower valve that I cannot remove the handle from. There is about an 8" ring with the handle mounted horizontal held on with a screw covered by an escutcheon cap. I removed the screw and pulled and tugged on the handle to no avail, then I cut a piece of hard maple in a long wedge shape, with a slot to fit over the shaft, shaped like a wood shingle, 6" long by 2" wide. I pounded this in the gap between the handle and a protruding barrel gently so I wouldn't ruin anything thinking I could loosen it up, no luck. I then put a piece of silver tape over the hole leaving a small gap at the top, and squirted the hole full of WD 40. Didn't help, and I'm at my wits end trying to remove this thing.
