Shower valve

My house has a very old American Standard single handled shower valve that I cannot remove the handle from. There is about an 8" ring with the handle mounted horizontal held on with a screw covered by an escutcheon cap. I removed the screw and pulled and tugged on the handle to no avail, then I cut a piece of hard maple in a long wedge shape, with a slot to fit over the shaft, shaped like a wood shingle, 6" long by 2" wide. I pounded this in the gap between the handle and a protruding barrel gently so I wouldn't ruin anything thinking I could loosen it up, no luck. I then put a piece of silver tape over the hole leaving a small gap at the top, and squirted the hole full of WD 40. Didn't help, and I'm at my wits end trying to remove this thing.

It is corroded onto the shaft, you will most likely ruin that shaft getting it off. You should be able to replace the cartridge though. If not get ready to replace the entire valve.

be careful so you dont bugger up the threads in the screw hole, you may need a cartridge puller to remove the valve cartridge . some of the american standards have a threaded cartridge that just unscrews out of the valve body. some are set up like the moen 1200 cartridge, where you remove a little horse shoe type clip, and then use a cartridge puller to get them out. when assembling them a abundant coat of plumbers grease (not thread sealant) goes on the seals before installing.

Once I had to replace some parts in the American Standard tanks of the toilets after many unknown years. Someone wondered where we would be able to find parts. Went to the only plumbers in town and learned that they didn't stock and sell any parts other than American Standard. Those toilets were made to last. Don't know about their faucets but expect at one time they were top of the line, until they probably went Chinese to make an extra buck.
