Electricion question

In order to add a half bath we'd have to move the main breaker box to the next stud space. How involved/costly is something like this to be?

Wire length is one consideration, if there is enough slack in the wire to pull them up and over, not a problem. If you do have to splice any wires, it must be done inside an accessible enclosure, not laying in the attic or inside a wall!

The other consideration is how is the panel fed? Many times the meter is directly behind the panel. If it is, the meter and service entrance would need to be moved, which can be quite involved, especially if brick work is involved, roof penetration, getting the service provider involved, etc.

Code states, that junctions boxes shall be readly accessible. So an attic could be OK.

You said 1 stud space. I would think that the meter would not have to be moved. But I can not see how things are located.

It would be a bit better if you don't do any splices. Might be good to talk to a good trusted electrical guy.

My old boss might not like this answer but, call a local electrical contractor and get an estimate. They usualy would be free and you would get an expert's advice. I am thankfuly retired , I always hated those kind of jobs. Way to many questions to answer here like , first floor, basement, attic craw space, romex, BX, conduit , main panel, sub panel, 100 or 200 amp. And if need to pull or move meter, and just so many other things. Wish you luck. joe

Is the meter back to back with the panel?
Under ground or overhead service?
Conduit, BX, romex?
All of those things will affect the difficulty and cost.
Some wires will likely need to be shortened....no problem.
Some will need to be lengthened.....as mentioned the splices have to be in an accessible enclosure. That will likely be involved.

It's no fun moving an under ground service. That will likely involve the utility company burying new wire. That gets expensive.

Something that hasn't been mentioned is when you move a service you have to bring it up to code. So if your current set up doesn't meet the current code you could be looking at an expensive undertaking.

Consider Buick's suggestion about moving the bathroom.
