O.T. Computor

I get the pop-up from time to time, everyone I know that has down loaded it says not to do it,some have taken it off after they found out how screwed up it is,I am not putting it on my computer.

I asked that same question on another news group. They basically said it was a monitoring tool my Microsoft the get information off your computer. There is ways to stop that on windows 10 if you know how to do it. Im afraid there will be a time that you will have no choice as windows 10 is being pushed pretty hard for a reason by Microsoft. Windows 10 cost money in the stores. Now there giving it to you free. Nothing is free without a reason. Time will tell. For now I will not down load it. just my 3 cents worth.

I tried it and found out that half of my older programs would NOT work in Windows 10. I had windows 7 reinstalled. I also heard that Windows 8 was not so good either.

I tried Windows 10 on my Windows 7 computer and I did not like it and went back to Windows 7. I also have a Windows 8.1 laptop and I put Windows 10 in it and it is an improvement over Windows 8 which is terrible. My recommendation is if you have Windows 7 - keep it. If you have Windows 8 or 8.1 - get Windows 10 quick.

I didn't like Windows 7 and I didn't want to upgrade to 8 or 10 so I installed Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop. That worked OK on my computer but I'd recommend Linux Mint Mate instead. You can have it installed with any Windows OS and change back and forth for different applications but many of the Windows programs that I want to use will run on the Linux system too. My computer seems to boot in 1/2 the time now and shuts down in 1/10 of what it did with Windows 7.

I stopped using Windows about 10 years ago and switched to Linux. Mint is good for beginners especially. Cinnamon is the main edition basically, Mate is lighter, for older computers, or for preference.

Windows 10 is decent. Only major issue around here is most people have data capped Internet on satellite or cellular, Windows updates and other services blow through data very quickly, by default everything is on. Have to set it as a metered connection, but Microsoft only allows that on wireless connections, so wired desktops need to be made wireless (~$10). Annoying, but doable, just don't know why they don't allow wired connections to be set as data limited. Still, updates can be a few gigs.

Spybot Anti-Beacon is a free reputable program to block most of the "spying" stuff. Google will turn up reviews, etc. As I said, it is legit, company has been around for years, they have a product similar to Malwarebytes as well. I often use it to clean out infected systems in addition to Malwarebytes.

I took the free upgrade.
Pro, you get to learn new terms for same old thing.
Ex: My computer /computer is now "this PC". You can rename it if you want.
Support should be around for a longer time than for 7.

Cons: For me it is I have Win 10 scattered over 132GB of my hard drive.
I have no docs, photos , music videos. It was a clean install of 7 and an up grade to 10.
I want to resize my hard drive to about 60GB for windows10 and the rest for linux.
If/when you do up grade keep track of your Win 7 product code and for 10, version # and
build #.

If I wasn't held hostage to have a Windows OS on 1 computer, Windows would be long gone.

(quoted from post at 07:28:25 01/19/16) computer is a tool how many have took the free windows 10 upgrade I am on windows 7 pros and cons.
Windows 7 user here
Pros:
solid operating system, IMHO one of MS's best
will work with 99% of all hardware made
the look and feel of the desktop is agreable
the menu pane is simple to use.
cons:
will be obsolete soon in favor of win10

Typing this on Win 10 , wish I had never upgraded . The e mail program comes from the ark ! just garbage .
As a tech savvy 15 year old told me , it's a system designed for tablets and phones adapted for use on laptops , yes and it shows .

Upgrade - NO, Factory loaded - Yes. I did the upgrade and it ruined my last laptop. This one is factory with 10 and its working flawlessly for me.

Email, you can use another program. Thunderbird, Opera Mail, etc.

And you don't have to use the tablet apps if you don't like them. Start menu is different, but not that much except for the tiles that can be ignored, basic running of it isn't much different from 7. Taskbar, start menu, no need to search for new names, just start typing in the search box. Type in "control panel" and it shows, click, looks much like it used to. Type "printer", devices and printers is the result, again, much like it used to.

"New terms", yes, but if you type "my computer" in that search box by start, "this pc" is the result. Don't know why they changed the name. Easier for those that use windows to just type in that box rather than hunt for stuff they can't find.

Your Windows install takes up 132GB, is that what you mean? I keep Windows on a partition so that I can help others, I rarely use it, but it's nice to have if I walk someone through how to do something over the phone for instance. It's got a few programs, not many, not many files because everything is in the Linux side. Anyway, install is taking around 40GB. My guess is since you upgraded from an old version, a chunk of that size is the old version backup. There are several guides to reduce it's install size, here's one to remove those backups. http://lifehacker.com/reclaim-disk-space-after-windows-10-update-by-deleting-1720934718

After you get that size down, it's best to use Disk Management from in Windows to resize your drive. Then in the Linux install, just point to the new space, and it will divide that up how you want. The Linux installer can also resize, but with a dual boot I like to do it that way if Windows is already installed.

I upgraded two laptops and never looked back. Flawless upgrade. I compare people who complain about the Windows10 upgrade with people who complain about ethanol.

If your computer is over three years old check
the manufactures web site to see if they support
Windows 10 on that model. If they don't some of
your hardware might not work.

Hi Pete,
This is a good post. I've enjoyed the exchange of ideas. A few months ago my Windows 7 computer was having a problem staying in the sleep mode. I downloaded Windows 10 because I thought it might solve the problem...it didn't. I didn't have any real problems with Win10, though. In fact, I considered buying a new pc with Win10 on it. I ended up wiping the hard drive and going back to Windows 7. It operates just like it did when it was brand new, but it still wakes from sleep mode for some reason. The good part is that now it goes back into sleep mode like the settings call for it to do.

Yes, that is what happened. Windows scan disk, dfrag, optimizer, etc after 4-5 tries could not get HD to less than 132 GB.Your article about clearing old files to revert to 7 might have been the answer but right now I can't even boot into Win 10. Right now I am thinking about new clean install of 10 on the Windows partition or scrap it all and start over. Thanks.

I guess the longer you wait to get 10, most of the bugs will be out of it. I will keep my 8.1 until they don't support it anymore. If I have to pay for 10. No problem if it keeps me from being ------ off at my computer.

I noticed that Classic Shell also works for Windows 10, so it can make the look and feel more familiar for those of you that don't like the new look. It may put some things back to where they used to be, easier to find, easier to use. I have not tried it on 10 personally, but anyone that I installed it for on 8, had no issues.
