Gun Repair tips.

Twenty three years ago my oldest brother died, afew months later his wife wanted to know what I thought his Ruger mark 1 pistol was worth, somebody offered her $75.00 for it so I think I gave her $125.00 for it and when she dropped it off she had his beat to death Winchester 290 rifle that she gave to me. I've been going to piece that rifle back together every since, started yesterday. Butt stock is broken off, Knob broken off inner magazine tube, outer mag. tube broken off the ring on the barrel end and its got some rust on it. I found a stock and an inner mag. tube on Ebay, going to try to dream up some remedy for the outer mag. tube attachment to the barrel, ain't going to buy a new barrel. Fifty years ago I bought some kind of bluing somewhere for an old gun which came out pretty good. So any tips for cleaning up the metal and bluing it and how would you refinish the stocks, its about a 1970 gun and don't have to be brought back to new condition. I bought a Winchester 22 mag. lever action in about 70 and shortly after he bought this 22 auto, they looked like a matched set, pretty guns.

Lots of cold blue compounds out there--Brownell's Oxpho-blue is probably the best known and intended for home use. All are best if only used to do small spots such as holster wear on high points, and none will match a premium-quality original finish. However, with care, surgical cleanliness and repeated coats, you can get a pretty decent finish that will certainly pass a cursory inspection and look better than a big patch of rusty metal in the middle of an otherwise nice gun. Just be aware that using any bluing compound will probably end up hurting the value of a collectible or otherwise valuable firearm, though as noted, if it's a "user" rather than a wall-hanger, I'd rather see a bit of blued patching done as opposed to rust and neglect.
