Butternut Squash Question

Hello,

I have been growing this type of squash for the last 10 years I have seen some deviation of shape, but last year it was 50/50. Is this a different kind or just a fluke? Taste is the same, But the skin is much thinner. I just cut one up. Its going to be baked with a roast.............

You grow other types of squash?? If you do you may be getting a cross pollination. I have had that happen with sweet and hot peppers

Hello old

I do grow summer squash, but the butternut is 100 feet away from the garden. I guess the bees did the job?
Am I gong to get the same shape when I plant this year? They taste good, but appear to be almost red on the inside, and have a softer skin,

Guido.

Squash can also cross with pumpkins since they are in the same family. I had some this year that where very odd. Sort of looked like butternut but a whole lot bigger and stayed green but for the most part tasted the same

No these where some sort of hybrid squash plant some one gave me. She told me that she did not plant any squash but well the fruit proves she did not know what she was doing. I have since not had anything to do with her but that is a whole different story

Hello old,

Some of the the long butternut had that shape too, but they were not that green,
Guido.

I waited a long time before I opened one up to see what it was. The vines on this one got to be more then 35 feet from one end to the other end. The biggest one was as big or bigger then a foot ball. If all goes well I'll have them coming up again next year since I had 2 or 3 if not more that I let rot in the raised bed so they may seed them selfs

We tried saving seed from hybrid pumpkins and planted some of them the next year. When you use seed from hybrid pumpkins you will different sizes and a color range from yellow to orange and green. We had people that loved the green ones. Seed saved from mini pumpkins you will get pumpkins that look like mini pumpkins on steroids.

A couple years ago I had planted pumpkins and a couple of them rotted where they where then the next year pumpkins came back in in that same area but they looked odd. The volunteer ones looked like pumpkin with warts

Squash easily hybridize and cross-pollinate--I've seen numerous times where different types planted together would yield fruit with characteristics of each. Yours looks more like a Neck Pumpkin squash--similar to butternut but with an elongated neck. We've planted them before and got squash 2+ feet long. Very tasty--great for baking or boiling.

I saved the seeds, and hope to get the same shape. I also like them green, the taste is like a summer squash and crunchy like a water cress. I even like them raw...

I didn't save any seeds as such but I did throw some to the seeds out into a raised bed so they may come up next spring. I also had a couple rot in a raised bed or 2 so they may come up. These fool plants that I had this year from where the plant was the vines went out a good 15-20 feet from the area of the roots.

I have intermixed butter nut with butter cup squash and didn't see any cross pollination. I like butter cup squash best but there is a vine bore that can get into the stems and kill the plant so I tried hiding them inside a plant they don't attack. Bores still found the plants.

We grow mini white pumpkins and often times get a few plants mixed in that are acorn squash. We do not plant any acorn squash or near acorn squash. We still pick them and eat them and they are great.
