have been working on replacing the bathtub with a shower stall. almost done but I cannot get the shower pipe
to stop leaking inside the wall. originally used teflon tape and had a leak. got oatley great white pipe
joint compound and tried it without success. the wall side is cpvc and the shower pipe is metal, both new.
part of the trouble is if you tighten the pipe it points in the wrong direction and the shower head points to
the left, I need about quarter of a turn to tighten it. have new sheet rock and new shower panel, glued
together. any help is appreciated. am I going to hire a plumber? thanks is advance!

An easy fix would be to replace it with pex or copper using Shark Bite fittings. Then you can position it where ever you need it. Yes I know the experts will say these fitting are bad. I have used them for many years with no problems.

I'm a plumber that works out of a Hardware Hank. We try to use our own parts but I have noticed that our shower arms are a slightly smaller o.d. than they need to be. If you look at the threads cross section they aren't cut well. The outside of the threads aren't sharp, they are flat across them. It's a case of a Chinese part looking right. Make sure you are using a high quality shower arm and tape it well.

I've been a plumber for 45 years. Try putting paste pipe dope on the threads first then Teflon tape over it. Be careful tightening it, cpvc will crack.

I had that problem a few years ago. I used JB-Weld instead of pipe dope. Been holding ever since.

I wonder if you female coupling in the wall is cracked???? I have had this on two different showers in just the last year. The shower head pipes are poor quality and you over tighten them trying to get a seal an you end up cracking the female fitting.

That is what I was going to suggest, go with a brass Shark Bite fitting. It can be tightened to the proper position, and CPVC will plug into it.

I've never trusted threaded PVC fittings indoors, especially in a wall! After a few years the female fittings will split, the male will shear off at the base of the threads.

If you have enough room, you can add a close nipple and a collar to give you two more joints to help with tightened angle. I've also glued a threaded pvc into a threaded pvc to correct bad threads, but this takes room in the wall too and you have already contaminated the threads in the wall and they have to be clean. Another option is to cut the threads another half turn on the shower pipe, shorten the small end, and go almost an extra round, if you have access to a pipe die.

went to lowes to look at the piece I bought to see if there was a washer inside or not. shock there is a washer, mine does not have one so I bought the piece for the washer. hopefully this will fix the leaking. will keep you updated. was thinking of using the jb weld but now will wait.

right now it looks like the leak is fixed. installed the washer from the new piece and wrapped 5 layers of teflon tape. ran the water and saw no leak. the pipe is tight and straight up and down. Thanks for all the responses.
