What's good and what's not in TV's now? See a lot of brands I never heard of before. Don't forget to turn your scales back in the morning!

Have a Vizio last few years. I like the picture seems brighter than some other brands.37 inch and no problems.Of course I grew up with GE,Admiral, RCA and Sears. These new brands are all foreign to me.I suppose side by side comparason at the store and choose the one thats pleaseing to you.

I don't think there's an easy answer to that.

Outside of a few premium brands, the rest are more or less just a "name" that doesn't manufacture anything, sources each model they sell from the lowest bidder, more or less, so two different models of the same "brand" may be made by different supplier and have NOTHING in common.

optiman,

("I suppose side by side comparason at the store and choose

In the old days the stores set up the more expensive TVs to have them SHARPER and the COLOUR was more accurate and brighter.
I once asked why, I was told it had to do with the cable and the better TV could pull in a better picture.

Young and Na?ve at the time.
_________

Now only a few companies world wide make TVs.

We have a bunch of Samsung. Every time we get one (lots of them just for computer screens, not just TV) I would go to a place like Best Buy where they have all of them turned on to the same channel. The Samsung usually always had the best picture. I have a slightly older Panasonic (30" for free) that I'm not too enthused about. The thing is they get better every year so I would say you need to go out and compare.

We've had great luck with Samsung. In fact, we have four in the house right now. One 50", two 24" and one 19".

I have two Vizio TVs never had a problem with them. Son has a 52" Samsung, and has had to have a tech out three times in as many years to replace the same part in it. The part has something to do with the imaging.

Just bought a new LG on one of the sales. 43 inch, picture is really good, sounds great (to someone thats half deaf). What I like about this one is the ability to see the picture from the side, not all allow it.

There are only a few manufactures of the major components. I think AmTran makes Vizio, JVC, and maybe LG. Samsung and Sony might make their own. Other brands are just labels.

Another vote here for samsung.

I haven't looked lately, but fairly recently their tv products have been very highly rated.

I have two, and would buy one again without any hesitation.

5 years ago it would have made a hugh difference. Today the cheaper brands have advanced to the point that they are now very acceptable to most everyone. Smaller tv's dont have to be as high quality as you cant see the defects. Larger sets show off all of the defects.

since most all tv's are now built with 4th to 6th generation glass the tv's now all perform very good.

Have a 55 inch Samsung and love it. Bought the highest level model I could. Fantastic picture when on HD channel.

Many of the "good old" electronics brands have been bought up by other companies or merged and many have become no better than the off brands you've never heard of. Even some of the larger manufacturers (Hitachi comes to mind) have largely stopped making TVs all together. GE and RCA merged under Thompson Consumer Electronics, Admiral hasn't been around for years and Sears sets were made by many different manufacturers over the years, Sanyo and RCA come to mind. I don't think there are any Sears branded ones now. As others have said, buy what pleases you. Stay away from the "too good to be true" priced ones although for the most part, there is no fixing them nowadays. They are largely disposable. I replaced our aging Hitachi rear projection TV last year with a Samsung LCD with LED backlight. Beautiful set! Make sure you don't buy too much TV, as in, if you don't have a HD source (satellite, cable box or blu ray player) you don't have to buy some of the more expensive sets, one with 720 resolution would be plenty. Lots of variables, generally if you can find a plasma set they are a bit cheaper than LCD but plasma was (maybe still is) prone to burn in on stationary images.
