Had it less then a year and probably didn't even have a hour on the machine. Its a Sear's Craftman and started making a funny sound and slowed down by a third on RPM's. Then you could smell it like getting hot. It will still run, no smoke, just smells. First one I ever owned and am disappointed. Is this a poor brand.

I've 2 Craftsman shop vacs. One is about 10 years old, the other about 25. Both have been good machines and still work as they should.

I had a couple Shop Vacs; neither was any good. I bought two Rigid vacs from Home Depot that worked just fine for many years.

Is it a Shop-Vac or a Sears Craftsman? It can't be both, they're different brands.

The older Sears shop vacuums were made by Emerson, I think. They were similar to those now sold under the Ridgid brand at Home Depot. Sears now sells three brands: Craftsman, Shop-Vac and Workshop. I think Craftsman and Workshop are both made by Emerson. All three brands carry warranties, take it back.

If it is still under warranty, take it back. If not try to take the motor open and lubricate the bearing where they forgot to when it was built.

I have one that I use on my bead blast cabinet. As you can imagine, it takes quite a beating with all that glass powder running through it. It has lasted at least 12 years, but every 6 months or so, I can hear a difference in the motor speed. When I do, I take it outside and blow it out with compressed air. It is amazing how much dust comes out of the fan and motor. After it is cleaned out, it runs like new. I have to clean the filter every 2 hours or so of run time. Been using the same filter since I bought the vacuum and it is still in good shape.

I buy the Ridgid ones from Home Despot.
Have had other brands but get the best service from Ridgid. And new filters are readily available too.
Those are an expendable tool for me. I suck up a lot of sheet rock dust, wet and dry grout, thinset mortar, etc which wrecks them.
They last a couple of years then the motor starts shreiking so bad all the dogs in the neighborhood start to howl.
When they get so you have to use ear plugs AND ear muffs it's time for a new one.

>They're all made by Emerson. Craftsman, Shop Vac, Workshop, Rigid, and a bunch of others...

Shop-Vac and Emerson are different companies. Certainaly Emerson makes vacuums under a number of brands, but Shop-Vac is not one of them.
