How big of a breaker box for a Lincoln 225 amp welder?

50 amp breaker is specified. You can get by with a 40 amp breaker if you're running 1/8" rod.

The wire to the welder must also be rated for 50 Amps

The minimun size box you can use would just hold that 1 two pole breaker and nothing more. Code does specify to plan for the future in which case if you have additional loads then more circuits in your sub=panel. Or a direct line from you existing panel if you have space for another two pole breaker , not adding any sub-panel. Feeding the welder from the existing panel you have now.
