Product improvement follows a need for something to change, in this case to fill a need for the machine to do more than what it was designed and built to do.
Research and development implements the idea, with a proof of concept to determine if the idea has merit and will accomplish the desired goal
You determined that the idea had merit and you were able to quickly prove the theory. Posting the results is market research to determine if anyone else had a way to improve on your improvement and or to suggest another improvement. Also publishing the concept determines the date that the possible patentable feature became public knowledge to establish idea ownership. The redneck fabrication is just a culmination of the Research and Development cycle. If you remake the cover out of steel and paint it to match, you graduated out of redneckness.
Proud of you! Roy

See a need, Fill a need. Necessity is the mother of invention. What ever way you think about it, IF it works, why laugh?

Had the boss look at me goofy at work one day. I had to buff down the entire order of an entire part. Instead of holding both the part and a hand sander, I took a length of baler twine and tied the sander to a "T" stand. Then boss came by to see how it was going; I said great now that I have it "patented", and showed him. He just shook his head and walked away.

I made the one for my mower out of an old piece of sheet metal I had laying around. Doesn't look much better than yours..

Just think, if you lived in the city the do gooder abundant yuppies may have a law against burning leaves or even piling in the streets or not using union labor to harvest them lol

I did that on my JD 165, but on the S240 I used a coffee can and three self tapping screws and some pop rivets. They both worked very well

Sad but true this Union machinist working on
$80000.00 aircraft engine parts on this Sunday
for double time, can't burn my leaves , so I just
Put them to good use on the garden , for which
I don't get any entitlement CRP to rest or plant
My garden space
