My nephew and his wife are trying to cut 10 inch diam. black walnut into 1 inch thick slabs for a craft project- they made a mitre box and used a chainsaw but it cut thru the wood sides of box-their latest idea is to have me weld 2 sawzall blades to make a longer one and try to use the mitre box method again ? Any other idea's ?

Bfullmer,Ask around someone around your neck of the woods has a Wood mizer or other brand portable band saw, that would cut your log any way you want it cut.

So stand up a short section on the sawmill. Sawzall ain't gonna do so good. A good bar and chain should let them cut straight by eye no problem, a worn bar or improperly sharpened chain wont

Find someone with an old fashioned circular buzzsaw. That would do a very neat job. Also if anybody has an old fashioned drag saw, that would work fine.

Find someone with a 14" or above bandsaw. Cut your log into manageable billets and feed through the bandsaw.

There are a lot of people around with a portable saw mill. You might take the log to them to have cut into lumber. It will cut better and will waste less wood. The blade on a saw mill is much thinner.

Use a less worn bar and chain. Might have to make a pivot mount for the nose of the bar. Chainsaw should do the trick.
