Win10 and still puzzled

I did the switch to win10 on my desktop. So far, I'm able to find my way around just fine. Thanks to the poster who suggested a right-click on the Windows Startup icon. I'm able to access the old-style control panel and other features. But, I'm having a problem that existed when I had Win7. This ting won't stay in Sleep mode. I've gone into the settings for the power buttons to change from sleep to hibernate and even changed the shutdown switch to hibernate, but neither of those changed it. When I click on the sleep button, it will go to sleep for a few minutes, then wake up. Is this likely to be a sign of old age? The computer is five years old, I'm 66. One of us has got to have some relief.

Goto device... check all serial and usb ports settings... unclick the "allow this device to wake up computer" except keyboard and mouse.

Also check the power setting of all usb and serial ports that keep power on when in sleep mode... Again, make sure keyboard and mouse are still powered up and all else goes to sleep.

If this is ok,, then check event log to see what program or device is waking up the computer.

I found three devices that had the checkmark in the box, so I cleared them. That didn't help, though. Now, can you tell me how to find the event log you mentioned? I found an event viewer, but I can't understand how it works. I downloaded Glasswire because I thought it would show me what was waking the computer, but I haven't figured it out, either.

you will need to very patient to figure this out. There are lots of things that can do this.

Next.. go to network and sharing center.. click.. then select adaptor settings. then click the adaptor in use.. either wifi or ethernet...

when it bring up the next box... click properties... then in that box... near top and to right, click the configure box.

there is usually a power setting tab... "allow device to be turned off" needs to be checked. And under options some devices will have an option.. "" allow device to wake up computer" and this option needs to be turned OFF or network traffic from your modem, printer, or wifi can wake up your computer.

TAG.. YOUR Turn.

I may not be in the area you suggested. I can only find "Network Connections". In that, though, I looked in "Local Area Connection" and there is "Realtek PCle FE Family Controller" under properties. This controller has three boxes under its power management tab. The first is "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power." Second is "Allow this device to wake up computer." Third is "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer." Only the first two are checked at this time. Do you know what a magic packet is?

Disregard my last question. I googled "magic packet" and decided I should leave that unchecked. I also unchecked the box for "Allow this device to wake computer." But, when I rebooted and tried putting the computer into sleep mode, it woke up in a few minutes. Thanks for your ideas, anyway. It may be time for a new computer.

Ok we know what it is NOT.... so..

You could have a program running under as a service or running under admin that is waking up the computer... I would bring up resmon and see what is running.. be sure to show "all Processes".

Could be as simple as the virus scanner or some other badly written program. click on the cpu column so that it is shows the processes actual using cpu percentage and watch that a bit to see what is running. You will see different processes pop us as they run and get an ideal of what is going on...

Okay,I'm looking at resmon and watching the biggest cpu users. Some I recognize, some I don't. The biggest is perfmon , a performance monitor. So, how can I check whether it is the culprit? Is there any way to look at resmon records at wakeup?

Bill,
The problem seems to be gone. I went to the old-style control panel by right-clicking on the start button. Then, Find and Fix Problems under System and Security. I used a troubleshooter for the hardware devices, and it showed to have fixed a problem. So, I set it to sleep mode, but it woke up after a few minutes. So, I went through the troubleshooter again, and it showed that it fixed another problem. I set it to sleep mode again and it staid all day. The troubleshooter probably found some of those boxes to uncheck that I couldn't find. Thanks for your help.
