Shortly we will be cutting firewood for the maple syrup evaporators. About 30 cord of 30"+ lengths.
We have alwayes used a 3pt. vertical spliter on one of the farm tractors. There is a lot of hard work bending, lifting, and working on your hands and knees using one of these splitters.
By mounting the splitter horizontally on my trackhoe, I will be able to reach out with the boom to lift, move, and split those big blocks from the seat of the hoe. I will also be able to lift uncut logs to get them off the ground for blocking. This should save a lot of work for all of us. Today I dug out some steel and formulated in my mind how to build the adaptor bracket that will pin, and clamp to the splitter frame. Tomarrow, I will drill all the pin and bolt holes, and weld all the peices up.
I don't know what the uncle will do. He always ran the lever before. HeHe

I use the same set up splitting for my outdoor wood boiler. Have it mounted on Stoll Loader on a Deutz Fahr. Split about 18 cords a year. Make splits on large wood mostly. Last split is made over the pile. Use a W R Long root grapple to move the split wood to the shed. Only time I put my hands on the wood is when lifting it to put in the stove. I call it my Old Man wood system. Cause I'm to old to lift or roll that big wood anymore.
I don't stack wood now. Have a 28'x56' shed I pile it under. Then a shed over wood boiler that will hold 3.5 cords. You'll enjoy that set up.

My brother has one that is made for skid steer loaders. You can put the wedge up or down. He uses it 100% of the time down. He just grabs the wood and does all his splitting right from the seat of the skid steer.
