Roto tiller no spark

I have a five HP Briggs on a rototiller that I cannot get any spark. The engine is at least 40 years old. It sat for two years and like the old saying it ran great prior to then. So far I tried a new plug, cleaned the face of the flywheel and the magneto. Any help would be appreciated.

TK had the same problem with a '70 model Craftsman 8 hp Briggs... did all you did, replaced the points with solid state gizmo and still no fire... it's the coil... find them on ebay pretty cheap..

Thinking the replacement coil will be electronic, solve all the ignition problems with one purchase. Just be sure the kill wire isn't shorted.

Sat a long times means the points have sat and corroded and you need to pull the flywheel and either clean or replace the points. Or install a electronic ignition chip and do away with the points. I have an old Murry lawn tractor that I installed a chip on years ago and last time I tried to start it the thing fired right up

Among other places "Jacks Small Engines" has parts for your Briggs and Stratton. Any authorized B&S Dealer shud also have what you made need for the engine.

While you are replacing the points, look to make sure the pin that opens them is free. That pin will stick in the block if the motor sits too long.

many times I have taken the condenser out and wire brushed it, the screw and bracket that holds it in. Put it right back in the engine and got spark. A 5 hp Briggs is easy to convert to electronic ignition.
