It worked the other day but NOT NOW. Wife plugs apple furnished cord into her I Phone 6 and other USB end into my laptops USB Port. The other day computer instantly recognized it (soon as cord plugged into USB Port) as Apple storage device then we went to DCIM pictures and copied her I Phone pics into computer. HOWEVER today no matter how many times I boot and re boot or plug and unplug and re plug USB and she has her phone off or on or in pics or anywhere MY LAPTOP DOES NOT SEE OR RECOGNIZE OR ACKNOWELEDGE ANYTHING WAS PLUGGED INTO THE USB EVEN THOUGH IT DID YESTERDAY. Its not recognizing anything is plugged in grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr is it my computer problem or a setting on her I Phone?????????

First, did you try rebooting (after power down) both devices? If it isn't a "hard" failure, the complete power down will usually bring it back. Happens to me all the time with my Lenovo laptop.

Not all USB ports are the same. Some can be reconfigured as virtual printer ports and then may or may not work as conventional USB.
USB ports can fail.
Wires can break internally.
A single hair on a USB socket or plug causes failed comm.
Try a jump drive in the port! Try blowing out the socket and plugs!
Look at the port settings!
Try a different port!
Try a different Computer!
Do not try a different Wife. Jim

Take the battery out of the phone for at least 10 min. when you put it back in it will reboot the phone. I was told it will go back to its basic factory installed settings, it worked for me....

I then went into settings and turned off the auto update function so far so good....

Hello John T,

Some devices need to be ejected from the computer before unplugging them. I know it does not help now, but get into the habit to do that. Fro the system tray find the media you have plugged in. Right click on it and choose the ejection option. It will then tell you it is safe to remove the device. WIndows XP was a pain with devices that were just pulled out. Hard reboot usually was in order..............

ditto what the others said..

check something like a thumb drive int he usb port.

next, if that works, DO check my computer. if it already mounted the volume ( phone) it may not make anyfanfare over it. I have RARELY experienced this with vista and windows phones too.

Lastly.. check the iphone cord.. they do break.. the wires are like hair..

NO thtas just it its NOT showing up in my computer and working like yesterday. It doesn't see or recognize when plugged in like the other day. I did remove USB device but that didn't help.

So, I tried a Apple phone to USB cable I bought off flea bay for like 99 cents AND IT WORKED. The phone popped up a warning message this is NOT an Apple approved cable and you may get aids and e bola if you use it, but it can be ignored AND IT WORKED the computer instantly recognized it as APPLE and I got the pictures off her phone onto my computer.

Oh well so much for original Apple furnished cable

There's an early failure of the lightning cables. Some times flipping the cable over in the iphone will help. Apple may replace the cable pending on age. I have seen almost new fail and old ones keep going. Makes no sense, but it is what it is.
