Gas Can Vent

I am in need of a way to vent a race can for use vertically. The can I currently have is designed to dispense diagonally but for dirt bikes the can has to stand at a straighter angle. I am looking for a sealed design that can be installed in the bottom of the 2.5gal jug to be opened when the can is held vertical. The can would only contain fuel during the race and no fuel would be stored in it between races. I understand the safety implications. The current method surges exposing the bike and the rider to splashing fuel during pit stops. We have tried different things but none have worked so far. The pro's have a trick design (IMS) but the cost is staggering. Thanks in Advance,

Aaron
View Can here mine is white/clear

I see your can already has one of the little pop-open vents on the side near the top. How about simply installing another one of those on the bottom of the can (or on the side near the bottom edge).

Looks easy enough to do. Drill a 1/2" hole in the side wall down toward the bottom. Install a tubeless valve stem into the 1/2" hole. Take the valve stem core out, screw the plastic cap back on and you're good to go.

In some auto parts store they sell brass pipe thread nuts if you can get a nut inside the can then screw in something like a brass radiator bleeder or morocycle petcock , vent through that opening .It may take pinching some rubber washer against the can at the new hole..

What ever you do, it needs to be large enough to be efficient, probably around 1/2 to 3/4 in.

If you put a bulk head fitting in the flat below the handle, then attach a piece of thin wall vinyl tubing long enough to reach the top of the spout, use a hook to hold it up when the bottle is upright. Then unhook it, hold it above the fuel level as the bottle is inverted. Should give a good size vent.

That's a good idea but why waste time with a valve cap. This is a race after all. Clamp (seal) a clear pvc hose over the end of the stem and tie wrap it up to and above where the existing vent is (aka NASCAR). Then all you have to do is pick up and invert the can. No fumbling with or loosing a cap while other racers are taking the lead.

I have drilled all my plastic gas cans then installed a Valve Stem. Remove the core from the stem. Makes a great vent.

Napa sells a kit with a spout and that same beather in it to replace todays goofy spouts. Just drill a hole in the bottom and install that same yellow breather. They cam be drilled out so they vent more than thst spout will flow.

On many of mine I have drilled and installed the bleeder valve designed for draining compressor tanks.
Maybe you could install a small gate valve with a hose that reaches in the tank to the bottom.

The races are 7 mile cross country (woods) races. We typically refuel at the 21 mile mark. My regular gas cans have a metal tire valve with a viton o ring. I found the regular tire valves come apart and the viton is a bit of insurance. I will try to look up bulkhead. These are great ideas and give me a good place to start. Thanks! Aaron
