Champion 400 Forge Blower

I am putting an electric motor on my Champion blower and would like to know what the recommended RPM should be for the input shaft. This unit came with a pulley on the input shaft but no motor or jack shaft. Before I spend a lot of time building something that won't work I would like any suggestions I can get.

I just clamped a small electric squirrel cage blower over the hole on the 400 [or any type hand blower works] and it allows me to use both the electric and the hand blower. [Used two adjustable clamps] The hand blower will pull air thru the squirrel cage. Small rocker electric cord switch easy reach near the blower to turn on and off. Have used it that way for years, Real handy when doing production work with little giant power hammer , Lot of irons in the fire for fast forging. Hand crank nice for starting and working with small items in the forge so you don't burn them up before being able to work them.

Those blowers were made to be hand cranked. By electric standards, very slow. I would think 3-4 seconds per revolution. You might want to look at gearhead motors.

Dustycoal,I just put a small round cover (electric box cover)over the intake hole on my small squirrel cage electric blower. With one screw in it,so you could slide it over to close it off some or to the side to open it up fully. It works great to control the air flow.

Yup! that will work good also. Good tip to not need a switch. Thanks, Always good to hear how others come up with ideas.

Best to forge out a nice handle for it. If you must motorize it I agree 15 rpm is about tops. Lots of running on a motor is hard service so make sure you keep it well oiled, replacing the bearings in a 400 requires machining for modern bearings. They are good old blowers but are designed for hand operation. And there are not too many left.
