electrical ignition problem

I have a 1965 ford in-line six that will start when the key is in the start position. When the key is released to the run position the engine dies. I thought the problem was the ignition switch. I checked volts at the resistor with the key at the run position and got 12 volts. I tested at the coil side of the resistor and got zero. I tested ohms from one side to the other on the resistor and got zero, don't know if that is the way to test or not.
I am thinking the resistor is bad?????? Yay or Nay any suggestions.

Those have a ballast resister by pass so good chance the resister is bad or one of the wires going to it are bad. I have a 1965 Ford 1 ton with the 300 6 in it and has been a good truck up till it lost brakes and have not been able to find brake parts for it due to being a fleet truck

Yep, resistor is done.

Quick test, jumper across the resistor terminals and start the engine, it should run.

Don't leave it jumpered though, replace the resistor.

If it has a ballast by pass while cranking feature and runs ONLY while cranking but dies otherwise, ID GUESS THE BALLAST (or wiring to it) IS BAD/OPEN. It should be around 1 to 4 ohms resistance but if infinity/open, its obviously BAD.

What gets wrecked when you jumper across the resistor for a long period? I hot wired from the battery and ran it awhile before I checked out that
resistor.

Thanks for the help guys, It's new resistor time I wonder if they are still available.

Your points will quickly burn out.

If run with a hot wire the points will burn out faster due to higher voltage going to them

If you cannot find a Ford ballast resister use one from Dodge electronic point-less system use ballast from approx 1970 -90's Dodge products. It has start & run resisters easy mount to your requirement

The "Resistor" in those older Fords was a special pink colored wire.
If it is truly bad and you can't find a replacement, you can do as Jack suggests.
There is a chance the ignition switch itself is the problem.
