Am in need of blade shaft assembly from blade up to and include pulley. Bearings gone-- twisted shaft into trying to get nut off at blade end.

Tried to upload picture of mower. Not sure if it did :?

Check with a good machine shop. Might be better and less expensive to have them make a new shaft.

Mr. Jordan,

I bought an old Gravely walk-behind mower with a similar brush-hog style cutter on the front end. It isn't worth a hoot in tall weeds. There's not enough room between the ground and the deck for the cut grass/weeds to exit from the mower, consequently, the grass just tangles and plugs up the mower.

If I had to do over, I wouldn't have bought the unit. Maybe your mower will work better than my Gravely, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Good luck,

I believe the mower in question has the blade completely exposed at the front of the deck and should have no problem with getting to the grass if it is tall (or legs either). Back when I was a kid my dad brought a mower home from the plant where he worked (had some brush to mow). That thing was similar in design to the one pictured but for a cutter it had a round plate (20 inches or so) and attached to the edge of that plate there were 3 or 4 sickle blade sections. You know how sharp those things are; well that mower sliced through and nearly removed the bottom few inches of my swing set metal leg and barely grunted. That steel plate made a good flywheel and once it was up to speed it would cut saplings and brush with no problem. It may have been self propelled but since I was 5 at the time it has been a long time ago to remember that detail.

Yes this mower does great job. Least until bearings froze up. Is this company not in business any longer for replacement parts?

No doubt the bearings would have been "off the shelf" items, so if you can find a number on them, you can get new bearings. A GOOD auto parts store should be able to help.

Tom - did you remove the front guard on the Gravely deck? It's supposed to be removed for anything but lawn cutting. I've cut some horrible stuff with my old Gravely. I used to use it to cut multiflora rose on steep hillsides that I couldn't hold a tractor on.

If it is a 30"Gravely deck, you remove the front and rear shields, and put the front shield on the rear of the mower. this way the material can get out from under the deck.

I second the comments about the gravely walking tractor with the bush hog/mower head attached. I have run mine into heavy overgrowth without issue, gaurd across front is not present. It's a handy tool to have.

MSM and PJH,

Thanks for your responses. I'll take a look at the shields and see if they are in the wrong places. Like you said, the old mower will cut lawn grass okay, but it won't do anything at all in tall weeds.

Thanks for the tip. That might just cure the whole problem.

Tom - MSM has the correct answer to your problem with the Gravely. The back guard is removed and the front guard is moved to the back for cutting heavy material. I had forgotten about switching guards front to back. A good running Gravely (they either run good or not at all) will cut some scary stuff.

Dad had a ROOF high wheeled weed mower, self propelled, 6-7 HP WISCONSIN engine that I bet weighed 150#. Cut about 24-30 inch swath, blade was almost totally exposed, had an angled tapered shield on one side of the blade and a deflector bar on the other. You could mow a full swath of grass 4-5 feet tall at a good walking pace.

Dad used it to mow around fence rows of fields every summer. Was not a fun job.

I have one very similar to that one, newer, labeled as "The DR Field and Brush Mower Mfg. by Bachtold Bros. exclusively for Country Home Products. 1-800-446-8746" I can find no model numbers anywhere on the mower, only for the engine. In 1999 I needed a sprocket for it, called DR, at 1-800-376-9637, told them what it looked like, and they sent the part. If I recall correctly, The lady on the phone referred to it as a Standard Model 8.0 I assume because it has an 8 hp Briggs engine. I don't know if those numbers are still valid, but ou might give them a try. The service was excellent.
