Ford/ New Holland 22-178 lower oil seal

Found a reference diagram that shows that the Ford and New Holland model 22-178 brush hog is one and the same . . .

My gear box is losing oil out of the bottom, haven't disassembled it yet, but assume that the lower oil seal (and hopefully ONLY the lower oil seal) is bad.

The part is cross referenced as #222167 - 1.5625 x 2.125 x .44
They want 28 dollars for it. I found a similar ID and OD but only .375 thick for 10 dollars.

I am not cheap - I am frugal because my financial situation dictates it. Any experience with changing this oil seal and would it be bad to put one in that is only 1/16 shorter?

thanks

Seal thickness in itself likely won't matter, but there MAY be a difference in the type of lip, and the original MAY have a "dirt excluding lip" that the thinner seal doesn't have.

Unless you already have, check out the link below... you can plug in dimensions, and look up the type of construction and lip type there.

You should probably plan on replacing the bearing while you have the gearbox partially apart. They are often the cause of a seal leaking.
