hydraulic jack question

Recently needed to use a hydraulic jack with it in a horizontal position (pushing sideways) and to my surprise it wouldn't push. But it
works when pushing vertically.

Haven't checked why and I'm no jack expert, but could it be low on hydraulic oil or whatever fluid it uses?

thanks, Ron

U need to use it with the pump on the bottom!
About 45 years ago I was using my fathers hyd jack in the horizontal position & it suddenly quit working. No matter what I did at the time I couldn't get it to work any position! He was quite mad & said to fix it, well I tried for awhile then gave up but kept it around, eventually I got it to work if I pushed on the ram while pumping! I still have it today & still have to push on ram to get it to work!

Alot of them will work if you have the pump on the bottom . You need to keep the pump inlet submerged in oil ...

I have used hydraulic jacks hortizontally to strighten bent metal. I have about seven jacks. The old, old ones will work. The newer ones won't.

An addendum.

I looked at McMaster Carr website and their listing of hydraulic jacks. They say most of their jacks will work in horizontal position if the handle (and I suppose pump) is on the lower side of the jack body.

exactly.

I find bottle jacks very useful to push stuck wheels off. Truck wheels rusted to a hub, tractor wheels that sat on a splined axle for 60 years, etc.
