Liquid in Air Cleaner Canister

Well besides my carb problem on my Farmall Super A...I'm not sure but think I have issue with the oil canister on air cleaner...I noticed a yellow/brown cream sorta seeping past the ring fastner that holds the canister on. I opened and removed canister; it is filled to the top with this yellowish brown milky liquid... shouldn't it be black oil in this canister? and how full should it be? What is this? sticker on canister says don't let more than an inch of dirt build up before changing.

Thanks
FRboy

Sounds like there's some water in the oil in it now.

I don't know what you mean by "black oil", should simply be clean engine oil of the same grade used in the engine crankcase.

SA 30 okay?...I just bought this from a supposed renovator. Do I fill the canister to the top?

If water, how would that get into the oil? Do I have a problem?

Its gotten water in the bowl, you'll need to clean out the bowl as well as the air cleaner to get out the water/oil mix and other oil/dirt gunk that's in it.The bowl should have a mark on it as to how full to fill it back with fresh oil.

It has water in it from condensation due to lack of routine maintenance.

Remove the oil cup, pour out the old oil/water, thoroughly clean the cup, and fill to the full level with engine oil.

If badly neglected (most are) you may wish to clean the filter and down tube as well.

Here is my concern with "neglected" I recently purchased from a fixer-upper gentleman who I want to believe was knowledgeable about what he enjoyed
Doing. I know little about these things...I was told tractor has a miss high throttle and probably needs new carb kit. BUT...wouldn't one of the most BASIC updates going thru the easiest least expensive fixes be to cleanup the air cleaner and add fresh oil to it? So what I'm asking...did he; but there's more gunk inside...or worse. I've driven it steadily for a day pulling a little cultivator...things now seem to be showing up as issues. Carb..pto doesnt work..water gunk in canister.

THANKS

There should be a mark on the cup to indicate the amount of oil to put in. Don't fill it to the top.

As suggested, before you do anything else, tear that air cleaner canister apart and thoroughly clean the upper screen mesh portion of that air cleaner. Pop had an Oliver 88 that was way down on power and running rough. The upper portion of the air cleaner screening was clogged so badly it took four days of soaking and blowing out with air to get it even remotely cleaned out to move any air properly. The change in engine performance afterwards was a miraculous thing to behold. Almost no one, (me included) ever services an oil bath air cleaner often enough.

It is called an oil bath air cleaner. It is supposed to have oil in it. It is supposed to serviced every 100 hours. Same interval as changing the engine oil and filter. More often in dusty conditions. Use the same oil as you use in the engine.

Probably woulden't be a bad idea to go after the other fluids as well. That moisture has a way of building up everywhere.

"Every 100 hours"

While we both know no one does it anymore it is more like everyday or 10 hours.
Just like every grease fitting is suppose to be greased everyday.

I am not talking about the oil cup on the bottom of the air cleaner. I'm refering to the cap that goes ontop of the intake tube that keeps large dibries and bugs, and RAIN from getting into the air cleaner

Farm and ranch boy, where are you located? There is a lot of knowledge on this website and if we knew where you are, you might be able to meet up with one of our members and I'm sure they would be very helpful..

Ferguson handbook for English built tractors recommends servicing the air cleaner once a day and more than once in dusty conditions .

(quoted from post at 06:18:44 09/12/15) No canister cap is on the bottom

FarmandRanchBoy, You can probably do better getting help using proper terminology. The best is to use the terms out of your owners manual. The whole air cleaner unit is the air cleaner. The main cylinder is the housing. The bottom part that the oil is in is the oil cup. The cap is pretty much always on top as in on your head, but some, such as the Fords have no cap, as the air comes in the side. Inside the housing is the element. There is no canister involved.
