I'm looking at using some 5/16"-18 nutserts. I'm not planning on buying the installation tool. Have any of you installed nutserts, especially this size without a tool? If so how did you do it? I'm looking at threading a capset screw into it with a nut on the capset screw before the nutsert. Then insert the nntset into the hole, hold the capset screw with an allen wrench and then tighting the nut against the nusert to set it.
Thanks,
Bill

There are a lot of different styles of Nutserts, don't know which one you have...

But, if you only have a few to do, and doing them yourself, (as opposed to turning it over to an employee) then your setup should work.

I've installed nutserts by drilling out the threads on a nut the same size as the nutsert, i.e. if you have a 1/4"x20 nutsert, drill the threads out of a 1/4"x20 nut. Then slip the nut over a bolt, thread the bolt into the nutsert. Place the whole assmebly in the hole, hold the drilled nut with an open ended wrech, then tighten the bolt down, this will pull the nutsert and expand it. Also, buy the appropriate sized drill for the nutsert, the tighter the fit the better the grip.

My son owns a company that manufactures rivet nuts (I believe the same as a nutsert)and I manufacture two tools for installing rivet nuts. Your method may work but it's always a good idea using a tool designed for the job.

I have installed several without the insert gun. For a 5/16 insert take a 5/16 flat washer lay it on top of the insert. Take a small piece of flat bar stock with a 5/16 hole in one end. Put it on top of the washer. Add another flat washer on top of the bar stock. Next take a 5/16 bolt and finger tighten all of this. Place insert in proper size hole and tighten the bolt. An air or electric impact works best for this. You hold the flat stock. As you tighten you may need to twist the bar stock. When you feel the bar stock get tight stop. As you will pull the treads out of the insert. Remove everything and test the insert. You may need to tighten a bit more. I have installed 1/4 5/16 and 3/8 plus several metric sizes this way. The key is to have the first flat washer fitting tight around the bolt. If not a good fit you can pull the insert through the washer and it leaves a bump on the top of the insert. A slight bend helps in the bar stock as to get your fingers under to hold. Hope this helps.
