OT Triumph 885i

Hello. I just acquired a Triumph Tiger
with issues. Price was right so I
jumped. It intermittently overheats. I
suspect a head gasket and while
draining the coolant, brown, I noticed
one if the plugs had white residue on
the tip. The plugs were black (rich?)
for the most part. Is the white crusty
tip on a black plug damning? I plan to
run pressure checks tomorrow. Aaron

I can't say for sure if you have a bad head gasket, but you're on the right track. Flushing the coolant good is the first step, as Triumphs are notorious for having casting sand left inside the engine blocks. I have the newer 1050 Tiger, and when I flushed my coolant at around 15K miles, it came out like mud. You'll want to flush the system several times and clean out the coolant reservoir. Also, make sure your cooling fan is coming on when you stop.

The 885i has an excellent reputation. There are several sites for Triumph owners where you can get good advice on your 885i. My first stop would be triumphrat.net.

The Tiger 885I is a dual sport motorcycle. I am hoping to not pull the head. Tonight will tell. Aaron.

(quoted from post at 11:48:29 08/20/15) Oh , so it is a motorcycle . I just rode the new KTM 1290 on a demo ride today.

1290? Back in the day KTMs were enduro bikes. 1290 may be a little heavy for that.

No they make street bikes now . Guy asked my what I wanted to ride and I said biggest street bike you have.It was smooth but I saw two little poor fit items that kinda turned me off . Never got into 6th gear on the demo . Well I tried but it was lugging. I think my Ducati [a 1999] is smoother.

Yes, coolant leaves white residue. I just did headgaskets on the wifes Subaru, two looked that way. Dont re-use them. You may wind up replacing the oxygen sensor if it has one.
