Left hand drill in automatic chuck.

I just learned something . I was extracting a broken stud from a special blind hole nut . Perfect job for lathe and left hand drill but . as the force of the lathe being in reverse acted against the chuck it would let the bit loosen due to the reverse rotation. Never thought about that happening. It worked as the broken stud started to uncrew itself But I had a heck of a time keeping the bit in the chuck tight.

That could be a good thing in the end... If the bit took hold of the broken stud and started backing it out, doing it in the lathe something would have to give!

I did not tighten the tailstock down so the piece of broken stud would have some " push back " space to unscrew from the workpiece. I had to hold the chuck with my hand to keep tight.
