Engine will only turn counterclockwise

I have a Farmall Super A. The engine does not run backwards if that is what you were thinking. I was trying to start the engine one morning and it cranked a few turns and then stopped dead. I pulled the starter and found nothing unusual there. I was able to work the engine one complete revolution in the counter clockwise direction (as looking from the front) by hand with the spark plugs out. No noticeable problems. Each piston went up and down. I then pulled the governor and could see nothing wrong there. Can still turn the engine counter clockwise easily but it will not turn in the clockwise direction at all. Almost seems like something is catching in the timing gears but am not sure. I can't hear anything. Has anyone see this before?

Are you saying that it will not turn AT ALL clockwise? Take off fan belt and see if it makes a diff. If it were a stuck valve it would do it both directions. Does anything change if clutch is pushed in while tying to turn ? Doesn't the Super A have a hydraulic pump that drives off engine ahead of clutch? Might check into that.

Could be something down in the bell housing. Any other gear driven accessories, hydraulic pump, power steering? Something is gravity falling into place to jam it.

About 40 years ago a friend bought a Farmall A and it would not crank with the handle. While he was jumping up and down on the handle I sat on the tractor and put my foot on the clutch. All of a sudden the engine turned and George landed on the floor. When we took the gearbox top off the rivet had come out of the reverse gear on the top shaft and was wedging between 2 gears. MJ

Thank you for the suggestion. Pulling the valve cover will be easy and see if everything moves properly.
Interesting that a broken rod would allow turning in one direction and not the other with the spark plugs out.

Interesting. Was this true even with the tractor in neutral? I would think that the gear box would not be connected unless in drive.

I had the gear on the hydraulic pump come off on a 100 it made a noise like a water pump going bad and fugded up every gear in the front of the engine... (the engine still ran) I would at the least pull the pump its EZ to remove and check...

Had a 3010 gas once that started making a loud hammering sound. I could turn the engine backwards by hand but not forward by hand.
I found a valve seat had fell out of the head and was hitting the piston.

John,

You provided the right answer. I pulled the hydraulic pump and the problem still existed. I then pulled the Magneto and the problem went away. It turned out to be a broken Magneto spring that allowed the engine to turn backwards but not in the forward direction. I was turning the engine by hand with the plugs out, to figure this all out.

sure
something broken touching a gear, bellhousing, trans, engine,
could be anywhere, have to track it down.

picture a toothed gear standing upright, lay a piece of flat steel against the teeth at an angle.
gear could turn endlessly rotating away from the plate, turn against the plate, the gear jams instantly.
just like the ratchet on a come-along.
be patient, keep looking you'll find it, don't force anything.
