Tapping plastic

I wouldn't worry much about 1 hole, but a little lubrication wouldn't hurt. If it's food service or similar, use vegetable oil.

Plastic is a very broad term. Like saying metal, many types, many different characteristics, some will crack soon after if oil is used, some work dry, some need lube or it galls up and makes a mess and tears the threads. I would recommend water if entirely unknown or a very light coat of silicone on the tap only as the safest bet

I have had very little success tapping plastic, the force from the tap tends to melt the plastic and leave deformed threads. Can you drill through and put nut on other side, or use screws?

If you're tapping polycarbonate (Lexan, etc) you do NOT want to use a petroleum-based lubricant.

Acrylic plastics (Plexiglass, etc) are brittle, and tend to crack easily. ....I like to go to a SLIGHTLY larger tap drill.

Nylon & UHMW Polyethylene do not usually cause any problem tapping dry.

Usually, I don't use any lubricant at all when tapping plastics - (your mileage may vary).

Once the tap is started, I only advance a few turns before backing the tap out to clean debris. .... Too much friction
generates heat, and may fuse the tap in the plastic.
