Small engine flywheel

I have engine on my pressure washer that threw craps. I have a lawnmower engine I want to use. I know a lawnmower engine won't run without a blade because it acts as flywheel. I wonder if the mass in the pressure washer pump is enough to make it a flywheel.

You need a cast iron flywheel. They were used mostly on horizontal shaft engines but may fit your vertical shaft engine. Look in the scrap pile
at the local mower shop. HTH

ldj,

I believe I have the opposite issue than you. I've a horizontal Tecumseh (shot) that I am replacing with a pressure washer engine.

The pressure washer engine will run without any device attached to the crank. ai am unsure of the Tecumseh though,

Check to see, bet your old engine had a cast iron flywheel and mower has an aluminum.

I put a lawn mower engine on a string trimmer, no blade. Had to replace flywheel with
cast iron.

You don't say which engines, but are they near enough alike you can swap flywheels? On a lot of similar Briggs engines you can swap. You may have to re-gap the magneto.

Of course that won't work if they are different manufacturers.

The engine mfg. was sure they need the heavier flywheel on the pressure washer or it would not be there.

I think he is asking if his other motor will work with his pressure washer. If it is of high enough horsepower, it will. We have started all sorts of engines with nothing attached, including lawn mowers. Any lawn mower engine will start and run without a blade, they rely on integral flywheels. I think he is refering to the spinning mass of the blade acting as a flywheel. The pump will not act as a flywheel, because it will be a resistance. If you can make it mate up to the input shaft of the pump, it should work. Engine size will determine how well.

(quoted from post at 09:35:48 08/15/15) Do you mean the CAPS on the connecting rods is what threw??

No, nothing threw. That term is used as in dice, when you throw craps, that is bad, you lose. The compression release on the cam shaft messed up. With a plastic camshaft and timing gear and over $40 for a camshaft. Well I'm the loser for having an engine made like that. That compression release is made from light sheet metal with a itty bitty spring, just cheap stuff that is expensive. OH BTW it is a USA made Briggs&Stratton

Friend had a similar problem with 18 hp briggs. Compression relief on cam when bad. It
cost over $100 to repair, cam and gasket set.

Not sure Briggs are still made in USA. Cam problems are happening more often, not to
mention OHV valve adjustment issues.

Boy had a 6.5 briggs on JD push mower. Crank bolt came lose, broke rod.

(quoted from post at 11:48:36 08/16/15) Before getting too excited check the crankshaft. Most pressure washers have tapered shaft , mowers straight shaft .

It's a straight shaft
