I didnt want to hijack the thread about the winchester, but has anyone here tried making a batch of Ed's red gun cleaning solution? It is made of equal parts of Mobil 1 synthetic A.T.F acetone, oderless mineral spirits ,and K1 kerosene I have used a home brewed penitrating oil made out of A.T.F , and acetone and that works well,so I made up some Ed's red and it works realy well too .

Maybe I should try that. I recently acquired a Colt Colteer 4-22, and I don't think it had ever been apart for cleaning. I got it apart, and used Kano Kroil to clean up the action so it would work. You could barely cycle the action by hand when I got it.

I would be careful using this mixture. It has several things in it that penetrate real well.

It should work well for cleaning as long as you don't leave the firearm loaded as this stands a real good chance of penetrating past the bullet letting the powder get damp. That can cause mis-fire or worse a slow burn allowing the firearm to over pressure and that can be real bad or not allowing enough pressure causing a bullet to lodge in the barrel.

I would also hesitate due to the fact that some if the items are pretty flammable.

Using it to get something unstuck but after I would wipe clean with a good cotton cloth or cleaning patch if used in the bore and then finish up with Break Free CLP.

Just my 2 cents.

So you are saying there are people who clean guns without first unloading them?
Then clean them by submerging in a cleaning solution.
Then quickly discharge the gun while it is still dripping wet.

I always unload them. When I shot a lot, I used to clean my pistols in a small table top parts washer with my version of Eds Red. Just pulled the grips off, propped it up and directed the stream in the action or on the face of the barrel. It works really well and its fast. While you can shoot it right out of the tank, doing that is kinda messy. It blows the thin oil all over you but it doesnt hurt anything on the gun. I would usually turn off the parts washer and let the gun sit to drip dry overnight and then hit it with the air compressor in the driveway. Yes, doing that is still a little messy, dont do it in good clothes.
