Been getting a Microsoft reminder to reserve my free update before July 29th, have 8.1 now, is a windows 10 something I'm going to want to do?

've been running the "insider preview" for some time now. It boots into a regular desktop. Instead of a whole "tile" screen there is a smaller screen that appears along with a "start menu", so it looks closer to Win 7. It seems to be a little quicker (uses less resources). One of the things you agree to in the EULA is automatic updates and SOME people will complain about that. Just make sure you have thing you want to keep (including bookmarks) backed up just in case something goes astray. My biggest complaint is; In Edge (the new browser) I haven't been able to arrange my bookmarks like I want. There is/was a rollback feature, but I don't know if it's still listed. I did 'clean' installs so I didn't have the previous OS to rollback to.

Will Office 2010 and Office 2007 still work with Windows 10 or will I have to upgrade to Office 365 and make annual payments?

For those who have a problem with windows 8 interface google "Start8" and get it. It makes windows 8 look almost identical to windows 7. I built my own computer and have had windows 8 as well as start 8 from the beginning and have had no issues. The company that makes Start8 (Stardock Corp.) is in the process of making a (start10) for for windows 10.

It seems to have fixed the window 8 cruddy interface problem.. Early versions were great.. booted faster, shut down faster. later beta versions bloated up a bit but still worked better than win8. I dont see a problem with it. And yes, it will run the older programs. Like all windows, it will initially be fast but slow down with patches. Old machines with little memory and slow 32bit processors will still be slow. 64 bit machines can use the additional memory and a i5 processor or better will give good performance. Especially if your impatient like me.

I don't see how it could be worse than 8. I would think it would technologically impossible to get any worse than windows 8. I have the update that makes it work more like 7, but it is still the worst piece of garbage I have ever used.

I'll have to agree that WIN 8 is not all that great if you are using it on a desktop system.

However if you are using it on a tablet with a touchscreen it's actually pretty good.

You can reserve it now and decide later if you want to install it.

My guess is that Microsoft wants to quit supporting a half dozen versions of Windows, so they're giving 10 away for free to get everyone on the same update schedule. Plus they created so much bad publicity for themselves with 8.0 they need to do something before everyone switches to Apple.

Just a few comments about all of this upgrading that may not actually be an upgrade....
There was really nothing wrong with XP. It took some getting used to at first, but after a multitude of updates and security patches, it was a solid and stable OS. Now along comes Vista. Again, Microsoft shoots themselves in the foot, so then quickly comes Windows 7. An unnecessary upgrade, but livable. Then once again, MS shoots themselves in the foot with Windows 8.
All this time, I am thinking "what's wrong with windows 7?" And why do they want me to continually be changing my OS?? Why fix something that isn't broken?? As to the security end of it, I can only say this: Wintel systems are most commonly attacked and hacked because they make up over 90 per cent of the PC market. And to the smug Apple users that stick their noses up in the air, I say "your turn is coming." Hackers and malware authors just don't bother at this point to target such a small part of the PC market. But, with the proliferation of "smart" phones and the like, they will soon be on that if they are not already.
Just an opinion, but if I had my way about it, I would have stayed with XP. Browser issues pushed me away from it.

You're sounding a little "smug" here.

So, what was your point in quoting and reposting my entire post? Just to add a little one liner? You could have made your jab without reposting my statement.

tablets are running smaller processors.. so maybe 10 will have less bloat. less bloat means booting faster, running faster and shutting down faster.
