got these channel lock pliers a while ago at a sale, could never figure out what they were for. looks like the jaws saw some serious machining. some kind of crimping or something?

Never seen 'em like that before and I'm just speculating here, but they look awful close to a batch of Leathermans the Air Force had made. I'm speculating one could crimp a blasting cap to Det cord or time fuse with a pair of Channel locks like that.

Looks to me like someone modified them to pull a roller chain together to insert the master link.

I have a pair of Craftsman pliers that I bought new in the sixties that has that exact same round slot. I used those pliers for pulling brake springs. I don't know what the original purpose was but they came in handy doing brake jobs on the old cars.

Hose clamp pliers. The old hose clamps made of round steel and used on many older cars etc

Jk2 and Russ have it nailed they are primarly to pull roller chain together among any other uses you can find for them

what is odd is the tip of the jaws where they come together. the lower jaw is machined with bevel in it and the upper jaw has a slight concave to it. if you crimp on a piece of sheet metal it will bend about a 45 degree angle in the metal. the machining is good, it hasnt been done on a bench grinder. the local coffee clutch think its some kind of crimper. odd too is the way the upper jaw is re-shaped.

I have a pair that I found up in the steel at an auto plant. They were hand ground that way.
Being that I'm an Electrician, I found that they worked very well for tightening conduit lock nuts.
