Getting rid of split rim wheels on Chevy

Hey folks,

I just bought a new tool: a 1971 Chevy c-30 dump truck.

I am fixing it up to look good and be useful.

It has Split rim wheels on it (has duals) and I would like to get rid of those and at least get some regular steel rims.

Does anyone happen to know what years of these trucks will interchange rims.

I would love to find some alloy rims if possible.

Thanks in advance,

Brad

Brad are they 16" or 20" wheels if they are 20" do they have the Budd style lug nuts or are they the flat nuts? come back

It had the same hole pattern as a 3/4 ton just bigger studs . Any tire store or truck junk yard can get you tubeless wheels for it .

A C-30 should be a simple common 1 ton that has the 8 hole rims and those are common as dirt and most any 8 hole rim will bolt right up

Yes they will bolt up...

Ford are Dodge rims are not the same as a Chevy rim...

Ford and dodge use the lug nuts to center the rim to the hub,,, Chevy uses the center hole in the rim to center the rim to the hub...

Its not quite as EZ as you would think...

Can't help with the rims, but had a 1972 one ton dually dump that had the factory double disk clutch...flywheel, clutch disk, partial pressure plate, second clutch disk, full pressure plate. Holy cow that was something to shift. Ease the clutch out about 1/4 of the way, and then it would shoot my knee over my shoulder into the rear window as it came out the rest of the way. OK, I'm exaggerating, but not a whole, whole lot. Took some real getting used to, but was bullet proof.

Looked similar to this...

Are they:

Split rim - the style that comes apart in the middle like an Oreo cookie, aka the Widowmaker? Those you should get rid of.

Or are they a split ring - where the edge of a rim comes off as a small ring? These are good to go still. Safe enough and all.

I have a '69 GMC 1 ton. And mine has the 16" lock-ring wheels on it too.

Some of these guys don't know what they are talking about. Not all 8-lug wheels will work AND BE SAFE.

Ford uses a larger center hole and larger studs. There is no way to put one of these wheels on that truck and be safe. The lug nuts will work loose and they carry all the load.

There are wheels out there that fit, I saw 4 on a similar year chevy but I do not know the year of the truck the wheels came from. I would think the truck would be from the late 70s or early 80s. If you know of any older salvage yard operators in your area, they would be the ones to ask.

Brad some of these guys are right after many years owning a tire shop I've seen 16"--18" and 20" split rims on the older Chevys and fords. If you have 16 or20" rims you should be able to go to a salvage yard that specializes in truck parts and they should be able to find steel rims that will work. They do need to be for a Chevrolet. Lug bolts are made to hold the wheel to truck not carry the load. As previously stated with the larger center hole--if you were to get ford or Dodge wheels the load would be carried by the lug bolts not the axle. I've been out along the road too many times fixing problems created by people running ford wheels on a Chevrolet truck.make sure the wheels you get are the same in the center where the lug bolts tighten around the wheels. Some wheels are flat--some have dimples where the nuts tighten against the rims. I cant remember I think if you have the 16" or 18" they should be flat.

I know there is a difference and may not be correct in the way I put it... It is nothing to assume they simply interchange tho... BTW chevy used a plate to go over the flat bolt holes to align the lug nuts that does look similar to the Ford/Dogge set up...

Balancing Ford/dodge truck rims like this have always been a issue for me because I are no one else I know has the correct tooling to mount them on a computer balancer. I have the standard lite truck cone set and would love to have the correct tool set that uses the lug bolts pattern to mount and center the rim to the arbor...
I don't do enough to justify the cost...

Thanks for all the replies and info.

I am going out this morning to move a trailer with the truck and will report back on the rim size and type.

Brad, if you were close to me, I have a lot of those chev wheels. Most of them are off of mid 70 to 80 chev C-30.We have 2 of those trucks so lots of spare wheels.

Hey tom.

Thanks for the useful information. I wish the I had a Hollander but some of the websites are pretty good for crossreferencing.
